The storyWhy this reference matters

TAG bought Heuer in 1985 and launched the Formula 1 the following year, the first collection born under the TAG Heuer name. Eddy Burgener designed it with one eye on Swatch and one on the surf watches of the day: an inner steel case clad in coloured fibreglass, and injected PVC straps supplied long, notched in a V so the buyer could cut them to size, even over a wetsuit. It came in 28 and 34 mm and in black, white, red, blue and pink.

The name came from sponsorship, not from timing. TAG was up to its neck in Formula 1 with the Marlboro McLaren team, and the catalogues of the day said so plainly. It worked too well. The collection sold millions, and precisely for that reason, when LVMH bought the brand at the end of the nineties, it pulled the plug in 2000: too cheap and too casual for the plan to move the house upmarket. It came back in 2004.

This CAZ1010 is what survived of that experiment once the Formula 1 became the steel way into the brand. A quartz chronograph with a tenths-of-a-second register, something no mechanical chronograph in the house can do, a 43 mm case, a fixed bezel in black PVD and 200 metres of water resistance. It is probably the TAG Heuer that most people have worn without realising they were trying out a brand-new marque.

The reference prefix rules. CAZ means quartz chronograph; the three-hand version in the same case on the same bracelet is the WAZ1010.BA0842. If the listing says CAZ but there are no subdials in the photograph, something doesn't add up.

The suffix identifies what goes under the case. BA0842 is the three-link steel bracelet; CAZ1010s on a strap carry other suffixes, such as FT8024 or FT8030. The case and the dial are the same, so the price gap between two near-identical listings may come down to those four digits alone.

The dial is black, with three registers and a date window, and one of those registers reads tenths of a second. That detail is quartz's unmistakable signature: a mechanical chronograph from this brand never offers it. The bezel is fixed, steel with a black PVD coating, and the crystal is sapphire.

CollectingWhat collectors check

You're not buying rarity here, you're buying condition, because these were made by the shipload. The first thing to look at is the PVD on the bezel: the black coating wears off the edges and along the rim that scrapes against desks, and once it's stripped no amount of refinishing brings it back. A chewed bezel knocks more off the value than any scratch on the case.

Being quartz, the maintenance logic is different. The battery gets changed every few years and there's no full service to speak of, but do check that all three chronograph hands return exactly to zero when you reset them. If one sits off, it's a simple adjustment, but it does need doing, and plenty of sellers never even look.

The 200 metres depends on gaskets, and on a watch at this price almost nobody ever changes them. If you plan to get it wet, budget for a pressure test. On the bracelet, check the play between the links and the folding clasp with its pushers: it's the part that gives away a hard-worn watch first.
