The storyWhy this reference matters

The Cellini, launched in 2014, was the dress watch of a brand that doesn't sell dress watches. It never quite fitted, and in 2023 Rolex retired it without ceremony and put the Perpetual 1908 in its place. The name points to no model and no movement: it is the year Hans Wilsdorf coined the word Rolex and registered it in Switzerland. Putting a founding date on the dial of a dress watch is, coming from this house, a statement in itself.

The calibre 7140 is brand new. Automatic, 4 Hz, 66 hours of reserve, 38 jewels, Chronergy escapement and Paraflex shock absorbers: standard Rolex grammar so far. The novelty is the hairspring, a silicon Syloxi with patented geometry that the brand reserves for a handful of calibres and that chases consistency between positions. The rotor is solid yellow gold and the bridges carry Côtes de Genève with a polished groove between the bands.

And here is something Rolex almost never does: the case back is sapphire. The house that turned the screwed, opaque case into dogma lets you look straight at the mechanics. On the other side, a 39 mm case 9.5 tall with a two-tier bezel — domed on top, fluted below — and just 50 metres of water resistance, the most modest figure in the current catalogue.

Thirty-nine millimetres across and 9.5 thick. Reference 52508 is the 18-carat yellow gold one; the same case in white gold is the 52509. This example has an intense white dial with applied gold Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9, faceted indices, and a railway minute track printed in black.

Details you won't find on any other Rolex: the small seconds at six in its own subdial, an hours hand with an open circle just before the tip, and a bezel split into two distinct surfaces, one domed and one fluted. The crown plays the same game, domed and fluted at once.

It goes on matte alligator lined with green calfskin, closed by a gold Dualclasp — a double folding clasp, not a pin buckle. And at the back, sapphire. A 1908 with a solid case back simply doesn't exist.

CollectingWhat collectors check

A gold Rolex on a strap plays in a different league from a steel sports model: the buyer is different and the liquidity is a good deal thinner. In exchange, you see far fewer of them in the street, which for plenty of people is precisely the argument in its favour.

What to look at: the fluted bezel, which is the first thing a bad polish rounds off and leaves without definition; the sapphire back, which shows up every scratch however small; and the Dualclasp, which has more mechanism than an ordinary buckle and is worth opening and closing several times before you commit. The strap is a consumable — its condition shouldn't move the price, though it always does.

Check too that the gold shows none of the rippling that comes from over-polishing along the flanks, and ask for backlit photographs of the lug edges. In steel there is room to argue; in gold, the metal that has gone is gone for good.
