The storyWhy this reference matters

In 1953 Sir John Hunt's expedition put Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on top of Everest, and it had Oyster Perpetuals with it. Rolex launched the Explorer that same year to mark the occasion. The recipe has not changed in seventy years: black dial, 3, 6 and 9, Mercedes hands, smooth bezel, and that is it. No date, no chronograph, no second time zone. A watch built to be read fast with cold hands and gloves on.

What has changed, and quite a lot, is the size. The Explorer spent decades at 36 mm, grew to 39 with the reference 214270 in 2010, went back to 36 in 2021, and at Watches and Wonders 2023 finally appeared at 40 mm as this 224270. Rolex replaced nothing: it left both sizes side by side in the catalogue and let each wrist choose. It is the first time the Explorer's Oyster case has been offered in a large format.

The nice detail is that the 40 mm is not simply bigger. It measures 46.5 mm lug to lug, less than the old 39 mm, so it sits shorter than its diameter promises; the lugs went to 21 mm and the crown grew. And the word Explorer went back to twelve, where it lived before the 214270 sent it down to six.

Against the 39 mm 214270 there are three clear tells: "Explorer" printed at twelve rather than at six, 21 mm lugs instead of 20, and a shorter lug-to-lug at 46.5 mm against a little over 47. The crown is also visibly bigger. Against the 36 mm 124270 there is no trick to it: same calibre, same 11.6 mm thickness, everything simply scaled.

The dial is glossy black lacquer, with applied white gold indices and numerals, and Mercedes hands filled with Chromalight, which glows blue and lasts. The bezel is smooth, the crown a screw-down Twinlock, the sapphire crystal has no Cyclops — there is no date — and the case back is solid. Water resistance, 100 metres.

The bracelet is a three-link Oyster in solid links with an Oysterlock safety clasp and a 5 mm Easylink extension. If the clasp you are looking at is a plain Oysterclasp without the safety cover, it does not belong to this reference.

CollectingWhat collectors check

The first filter is the dial. Glossy lacquer shows up every speck of dust and every fingerprint under the crystal, so one backlit macro shot tells you more than ten studio photographs. Check too that the white gold indices are perfectly seated and that the lume responds evenly across all of them.

The second filter is the case. The 224270 has well-defined bevels on the lugs; one polish too many rounds them off, and it shows at a glance against catalogue photographs. And mind the straps: at 21 mm, the 20 mm ones from the 39 mm Explorer will not fit, and nor will much of what is on the market.

As across the whole range, the 36-against-40 argument moves the market both ways depending on which way fashion blows. Buy the one that fits you, not the one that is in. And ask for box, card and invoice: with Rolex, traceability is half the conversation.
