The storyWhy this reference matters
In 2020, for its sixtieth anniversary, Grand Seiko showed the 9SA5 calibre in two limited editions: the SLGH002 in gold and the SLGH003 in steel. The following year came the SLGH005, same engine and same case, but a catalogue piece with no serial numbering. It was the one that turned a show of strength into a watch you could walk into a shop and buy.
The 9SA5 solved an old problem: Hi-Beat movements burn energy in handfuls, and had been stuck at 55 hours. Grand Seiko attacked it on three fronts. A Dual Impulse escapement, where the impulse reaches the balance sometimes through the pallet fork and sometimes straight from the escape wheel. A free-sprung balance with an overcoil hairspring. And a horizontal going train that cuts the height. With two barrels in series and 47 jewels, the result is 80 hours beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour.
The case changed too. The Evolution 9 style lowers the profile, curves the lugs downwards and adds a small polished chamfer on the inside of each lug. And then the dial: the shirakaba pattern reproduces the white birches surrounding the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture. It isn't matt white; it's a metallic silver that shifts with the light and never photographs the way it actually looks.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
40 mm across, 47 lug to lug and 11.7 thick — but the lugs are 22 mm. That proportion, a wide bracelet on a forty-millimetre case, is the first thing that marks out the Evolution 9 case against the classic 44GS-style ones, which are far narrower at the lug.
There's no luminous material. Not on the hands, not on the markers: at night this watch cannot be read. It sounds like a fault and for plenty of people it is one, but it's also the fastest way to tell it from a Heritage or a Sport from the same brand.
Against its limited brothers from 2020: the SLGH003 is blue and the SLGH002 is gold, and both carry serial numbering. The 005 is textured silver, unnumbered. The case back is screwed sapphire and shows the whole 9SA5.
CollectingWhat collectors check
The textured dial is the heart of this watch and also its weak spot: it cannot be restored. Any speck under the crystal, any mark in the relief, stays there. Look at it under raking light and from several angles, because head-on the sheen hides everything.
The 9SA5 is a young calibre and exclusive to Grand Seiko: parts and servicing go through the official network, with no shortcuts and no generic components. Ask for the history. And check the rate after two days of reserve have been used, not straight off a full wind — the last hours are the ones that tell you whether the watch is healthy.
On the bracelet, check the play in the links and the push-button folding clasp. And the Zaratsu polish on the flanks: if the reflection of a table edge wobbles instead of running straight, somebody has polished this outside the factory, and the watch is no longer worth what it was.

Why is it called the White Birch?
After the white birch tree. The dial texture reproduces the birches around the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate, which is where the watch is made.
Does the SLGH005 have lume?
No. Neither the hands nor the markers carry Lumibrite, so it can't be read in the dark. It's a design decision, and it puts some buyers off.
What's special about the 9SA5 calibre?
It combines 36,000 vibrations per hour with 80 hours of power reserve, which hadn't been done together before. It gets there with the Dual Impulse escapement, a free-sprung balance and two barrels in series, on 47 jewels.
How is it different from the SLGH003?
Same calibre, same case. The SLGH003 was a 2020 limited edition with a blue dial; the SLGH005 is a catalogue model with the silver birch dial.
