The storyWhy this reference matters

The Top Time arrived in 1964 and it was not aimed at pilots or engineers. It was aimed at the baby boom. Breitling kept it simple — 36 mm, cheap by the standards of chronographs at the time, black dial, two silver registers, and an outer scale you chose from tachymeter, pulsometer or decimal. It worked straight away. It was the first watch the firm sold on attitude rather than function.

In 1965 the Top Time got itself into Thunderball. Sean Connery wore one fitted with a Geiger counter to hunt down stolen nuclear warheads, while the actual time of day still came from his Submariner. The good part comes later. That specific watch was written off as lost for decades, until it surfaced at a British car boot sale and somebody bought it for twenty-five pounds. Christie's sold it in 2013 for more than a hundred thousand. The Top Time stopped being the little brother that afternoon.

Breitling revived the name in 2020, and in 2021 put out a Classic Cars capsule built around three American cars of the sixties: Corvette, Mustang and Shelby Cobra, in 42 mm cases running a bought-in base movement. In 2023 it redid the set — diameter down to 41 mm, in-house Calibre 01 inside. This Corvette belongs to that second run. The car being saluted is the second-generation model, 1963 to 1967.

Start with the size and the movement, because there are two Corvettes and people mix them up constantly. The 2021 watch is 42 mm and runs a bought-in base calibre. This AB01761 is 41 mm by 13.3 mm and carries the in-house Calibre 01, on show through a screwed sapphire back. Lugs of 20 mm tapering to 18, and ten bar.

The dial is unmistakable. Corvette red ground, three black registers in a squircle shape — not quite square, not quite round — sunk into the dial the way instruments sit in the binnacle of a sixties sports car, a tachymeter scale round the rim and the Corvette badge printed under the brand name. Perforated black calfskin racing strap with a deployant.

One detail settles a lot of arguments: there is no date window. This Calibre 01 is the no-calendar version, forty jewels rather than forty-seven, which leaves the dial as clean as an original Top Time's. If the watch in front of you has a date, it is not this reference. The long suffix tells you the strap: perforated leather one way, steel mesh the other.

CollectingWhat collectors check

The soft spot on this watch is the red dial. It is a heavily saturated lacquer and it does not forgive: put a loupe on it and look for marks under the crystal, moisture spots around the edges of the registers, or a difference in tone between the centre and the tachymeter ring. A red that has gone dull or hazy never comes back, and sourcing a replacement dial for a short run is a problem measured in months.

Then the perforated strap. It is the part that degrades fastest and the part that makes the whole watch look older than it is: the holes stretch out of shape and the leather cracks where it meets the clasp. Not a disaster — straps get replaced — but the original with its signed deployant is worth having. While you are there, check the sapphire back is unmarked and that the signed rotor is where it should be.

From the chronograph, demand what you always demand: a clean start with no jump in the hand, a crisp stop, and an exact return to zero on all three registers. The lack of a date sidesteps the classic midnight-change breakage, which is quietly good news for a buyer. And in the market, the Classic Cars have moved better than other Top Times because of the crowd they pull in. The red Corvette is the most recognisable of the three, and also the one least likely to go unnoticed on a wrist.
