In brief

The calendar is what separates the 88 from the Valjoux 72 it grew out of, and certain configurations add a moonphase on top. This was the full version, for anyone who wanted a tricompax chronograph that also carried the date.

Short history

Architecture and column wheel come straight from the 72; the calendar mechanism sits on the same base bridge. That extra complication makes the 88 the rarer movement, and it is chased today by collectors who want a vintage chronograph with a triple calendar.
