In one line

The first chronograph Rolex designed and built from end to end. Column wheel, vertical clutch, 72 hours of power reserve and 201 parts — fewer than the reworked Zenith it replaced, and twenty hours more running time.

First things first: Zenith or Rolex? The dial tells you

This is the question that brings most people here, and nothing needs opening. The Daytona changed engines in 2000, and the two watches look so alike that at three metres nobody can separate them. At thirty centimetres, anyone can.

Look for the running seconds sub-dial, the small one that never stops turning.

That is not a styling whim. It is the architecture of the movement showing through the dial. The 4030 put the 12-hour counter at 6 and the running seconds at 9; the 4130 swaps the two. The three sub-dials of the 116520 also sit a little further apart, and a shade higher.

For final proof, look at the engraving on the case: 16520 is the Zenith, 116520 the in-house one. Five digits against six.

4130 against 4030: why Rolex went and built its own

For twelve years Rolex's automatic chronograph was not a Rolex. It was a Zenith El Primero bought raw and rebuilt part by part, with some two hundred modifications and roughly half the original components replaced.

The 4030 was no bad movement. The El Primero ranks among the finest automatic chronographs ever made, and Rolex treated it with respect: out came the date, in went a Breguet overcoil, a free-sprung Glucydur balance and Microstella regulation. The problem was never technical. The problem was having to ask somebody else for it.

The difference you feel on the wrist is those extra twenty hours. At 52 hours, a watch taken off on Friday afternoon has stopped by Monday morning. At 72, it hasn't.

Where it comes from

Until 1988 the Daytona was a hand-wound chronograph with a Valjoux 72 inside. Rolex wanted an automatic and did not have one, so it went to Le Locle and bought El Primero ébauches from Zenith. What came out of that was named the 4030, and it powered the reference 16520 for twelve years. It ran beautifully. It also belonged to somebody else.

The 4130 arrived in 2000 after a long development, and it arrived with a single obsession: fewer parts. Two hundred and one of them, and just twelve different types of screw against the El Primero's forty. A column wheel to control the chronograph, a vertical clutch to engage it, and 72 hours of power reserve.

It also introduced the Parachrom hairspring, the niobium-zirconium alloy now fitted to every Rolex. Twenty-three years in the catalogue followed. The 4131 took over in 2023 with a Chronergy escapement and 47 jewels, and it brought something no Daytona had ever had: a display caseback, on the platinum version.

Why it matters

This is the line between the vintage Daytona — Valjoux or Zenith underneath, and fiercely bid up at auction today — and the modern Daytona built entirely by Rolex. For a collector, whether a reference carries a 4030 (Zenith) or a 4130 (Rolex) rewrites the watch's story, its servicing and its value.

What a watchmaker checks before buying one

You are not looking for the same things here as on a 1960s chronograph. The 4130 is modern, tough and boring in the best sense: what matters is that it works as it should and comes with paperwork. Start the chronograph and watch the centre hand — it has to leave zero cleanly, without a jump. Avoiding that jump is the whole reason a vertical clutch exists, so if you see one, something is wrong.

Start and stop it three times in a row. All three hands must come back exactly to zero, and the 12-hour counter — the one hardly anybody tries — has to advance and reset like the others.

Then the thing that really sets the cost of ownership: Rolex has closed off parts supply to independents without certification, so a 4130 service goes through the official network. The price is known and so is the wait. A Daytona with a recent service record is worth paying more for.

Watches that used it

The other Rolex from the same house and much the same era: the calibre 3185, the GMT movement they had been building themselves for twenty years.
