In one line
The first Rolex automatic with a quickset date and the first to run at 28,800 vph. Eleven years in the catalogue, wedged between the 1570 and the 3135, and the generation almost nobody collects — which is why the watches carrying it are still the cheap way into a 1980s Rolex.
First things first: the dividing line is 1988, not the reference
With the Submariner Date the break is clean, and it works as a rule for everything else in the catalogue.
168000 “Triple Zero” (1987–1988, around nine months) → calibre 3035
16610 (1988–2010) → calibre 3135
The 168000 is the trap. Outwardly it is identical to the 16800, and it introduced the 904L steel Rolex uses today, so it gets advertised as “transitional” and sounds modern. Inside it is still a 3035. It was built for about nine months and is one of the shortest-lived Submariner references there is, which explains its price but not its mechanics.
The same line holds everywhere else: anything built up to 1988 has the 3035, and from that point on it is the 3135.
3035 versus 3135: the four changes that matter
Rolex did not rebuild the movement in 1988. It fixed the four things that went wrong with it, and one of those explains why the replacement lasted three decades.

The balance bridge is the change that counts. A cock holds the balance at one end; a bridge holds it at both. When the watch takes a knock, the staff has half as much room to shift. That, and nothing more mysterious, is where the 3135's reputation for being indestructible comes from.
One correction, because the opposite gets repeated so often: the 3035 already had a free-sprung balance with Microstella nuts. Neither the 3135 nor the 3035 invented that — it comes from the 1570 and from before. What changed in 1988 was how the balance is held.
1977, the worst possible year to launch a mechanical movement
Rolex launched it in the depths of the quartz crisis, and its answer was not a new escapement. It was to make the mechanical movement faster and easier to live with. From 19,800 to 28,800 vph. And a quickset date, which no Rolex automatic had until then: pull the crown to the first position, turn it, done. Before that you ran the hands past twelve as many times as there were days to make up.
The sports models took it first. The Submariner Date 16800 of 1979 came with it, and with the first sapphire crystal in the Submariner's history and 300 metres of water resistance. Then came the Sea-Dweller 16660 and the whole 160xx run of Datejusts. Its siblings divided up the rest of the catalogue: the 3055 drove the Day-Date, the 3075 brought the quickset to the GMT-Master 16750 in 1981, and in 1983 the 3085 made the first GMT-Master II possible — the 16760 “Fat Lady”, with its independently adjustable hour hand.
The 3135 arrived in 1988 and the 3035 disappeared. Rolex kept the free-sprung balance with Microstella nuts and the Breguet hairspring, both already here and in the 1570 before that, and changed the parts that failed. The 3035 lasted eleven years. Its replacement lasted thirty-two.
Three things almost nobody knows
- The quickset arrived late and spread fast Until 1977 no Rolex automatic let you change the date without turning the hands. The 3035 was the first, and within four years the function was across the range: the 3055 in the Day-Date and the 3075 in the GMT-Master 16750, both by 1981.
- The first GMT-Master II grew out of it The 3085, derived from the 3035, was the first Rolex calibre that let the hour hand be moved on its own. It went into the 16760 of 1983, the “Fat Lady”, and with it the watch could read three time zones at once.
- Its weak point is not the balance, it is the winding The reversing wheels in the 3000 family's automatic winding wear at roughly twice the rate of those in the 3135. By now most of them have done their time. Nothing breaks: the watch simply winds poorly and runs short of power.

What a watchmaker checks before buying one
Let the watch run right down, put it on and wear it for a morning. If it is still short of power after a few hours, look at the reversing wheels: this is the family's known weak point and most of them are due for replacement. They can be swapped. It is not a disaster, but it is a bill, and it belongs off the asking price.
Then the date. The 3035's date disc has a reputation for being fussy about centring. If the numeral sits crooked at midnight, or takes its time dropping into place, the teeth on the disc or the positioning spring have suffered.
And one thing you cannot see that still shapes the budget: here the hairspring is glued to the stud rather than laser-welded as on the 3135. If a knock moves it, the repair is more delicate and more expensive. On top of that, owners who have sent a 3035 through Rolex's own service report being charged at a higher band than for a 3135, on the grounds that it is two generations old. A watch worth less that costs more to keep.

Its predecessor is the 1570, running at 19,800 vph and without a quickset. Its successor is the 3135, which lasted three times as long.
