2824-2 — the most widely used automatic in Swiss watchmaking

In one line

The Swiss automatic that underpins everything: 25 jewels, 28,800 vph and 38 hours of power reserve on ETA's own data sheet. Tudor, TAG Heuer and Breitling have all used it without making much noise about it.

The first thing to find out: which grade yours is

Two watches with the same 2824-2 can run four seconds a day out, or thirty. Neither one is broken: ETA sold the same calibre in four different finishes, and the gap in price between the cheapest and the dearest was considerable.

From outside they are almost impossible to tell apart. The two upper grades use red jewels and a Glucydur balance; the two lower ones use paler synthetic jewels and a gilt nickel balance. Through a display back, with the rotor in the way and no loupe, good luck.

Asking is the reliable route. A brand that fits a Top grade says so in the brochure, because it has paid for it. And a watch that comes with a COSC certificate is a chronometer beyond argument: those movements are numbered one by one, precisely because the certification demands it.

2824-2 against the Sellita SW200-1: count the jewels

Since ETA turned off the tap, a good share of the watches that look as though they carry a 2824-2 are really running Sellita's clone. That is neither a swindle nor a cheap bodge, but you should know which one you have in front of you.

Sellita spent decades assembling ETA ébauches before it built its own, so this is not a workshop that appeared overnight. And the extra jewel is not marketing: it cuts friction on the barrel arbor, exactly where an automatic does its work.

The trouble is that you can only count them through a display back. With a solid caseback, the brand's own spec sheet is the only place to look.

Where it comes from

The ancestor is not an ETA. In 1948 Eterna launched the Eterna-Matic, an automatic whose rotor turned on five ball bearings instead of rubbing against a bush. It cut friction enough to reset the standard for the whole industry, and Eterna marked the occasion by putting five dots in its logo. Those are the bearings.

That family produced the Eterna 1427 in 1955 and, once the design had passed to ETA, the calibre 2824 in 1971. The definitive version, the 2824-2, went into mass production in 1982 and its architecture has not changed since.

What it won was not a technical race but an industrial one. It was cheap to make while holding serious tolerances, easy to regulate, easy to decorate, and anybody could buy one. Fifty years on, there is no Swiss watchmaker trained in that period who has not stripped one down, and that is now its greatest asset.

Why it matters

It is effectively an industry standard. Understand the 2824-2 and you understand how a large part of the modern Swiss automatic works, because dozens of brands have used it — sometimes straight from the box, sometimes reworked in-house — as the base for their own entry-level and mid-range models.

What a watchmaker checks before buying one

With this calibre the question is never whether it can be fixed. It always can, and cheaply. If somebody quotes you a fortune to service a 2824-2, the movement is not the problem.

What does get looked at is the rotor. It runs on a ball bearing, and when that bearing tires two symptoms appear: a gritty noise as you turn the watch, and vertical play in the winding mass. The second one ends with the rotor rubbing the inside of the caseback and leaving a circular scar that never comes out.

Then the Etachron regulator. It is designed to let a watchmaker fine-tune the play of the hairspring, which is exactly why it is the part most often fiddled with by people who should have left it alone. A 2824-2 that simply will not hold its rate in the vertical positions has usually had its stud holder turned by somebody in a hurry.

And the date, which should change around midnight. If it changes at noon, the hands were fitted twelve hours out. Nothing serious. It does tell you something about whoever worked on the watch before you.
