The storyWhy this reference matters
The story starts with a piece of paperwork. Georges Favre-Jacot registered the word Pilot in 1888, decades before flying became a commercial activity, and Zenith still holds the right: it is the only brand that can print PILOT on a watch dial. What was routine admin at the time turned into an asset no amount of money buys today, and it explains why the collection carries that name instead of one of the many euphemisms its competitors use.
In 2023 Zenith did something brave or reckless, depending who you ask, and threw the whole Type 20 look overboard. Gone the huge onion crown, gone the cathedral hands, gone the giant Arabic numerals of an instrument dial. In their place a flat bezel, sharp lugs that taper away, a crown still large but drawn in a modern hand, and a dial of horizontal ridges that mimics an aircraft fuselage. The stylistic jump was described as going from a Great War biplane to a stealth fighter.
One nod to the past survived, and you have to know where to look. The 30-minute counter at 3 is painted in alternating green, yellow and blue, and the central hand is orange. It is a quotation from the El Primero Rainbow Flyback of 1997, the multicoloured chronograph collectors now chase. On the black ceramic version that detail disappears: it belongs to the steel case alone.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
The first block of the reference settles the material: 03 is steel, 49 the microblasted black ceramic, both under the same /21 dial code. If the 30-minute counter is green, yellow and blue, it is the steel one. The ceramic goes without the rainbow.
The case runs 42.5 mm across, 14.3 mm tall and 51.4 mm lug to lug, with 100 metres of water resistance. The 51.4 mm is the number that actually matters: this is a long watch, and the wrist registers the length before the diameter.
The dial is black with horizontal ridges, carrying good-sized luminous Arabic numerals, small seconds at 9, the 30-minute counter at 3 and a big date at 6 inside a double frame. It ships with two interchangeable straps, black Cordura-textured rubber and brown calfskin, both released quickly from the reverse.
CollectingWhat collectors check
Try the flyback before anything else. With the chronograph running, one push should send the hand back to zero and start it again in a single continuous move, with no hesitation and no bounce. If it stalls or falls short, the module needs attention.
Put a loupe on the big date. The two discs have to sit level with one another and the change has to be instantaneous, under three hundredths of a second by the patented mechanism Zenith fits. A disc permanently out of line usually points to a knock, or to careless reassembly after a service.
And check that both original straps are there with their quick-release fittings, because replacing one is expensive and drags on the sale. Beyond that, the usual: vertical brushing intact on the flanks, polished bevels with no waves, and a stamped warranty, which counts for a lot on a reference still in the catalogue.
