The A384 was one of the three watches Zenith launched the El Primero with in 1969, alongside the gradient-dial A385 and the round A386. It is the odd one out: a tonneau case with straight flanks, a white lacquered dial with three black registers, a tachymeter printed on the rim and a date squeezed in at 4:30, where it upsets the symmetry but suits the hand. The A386 took the fame. The A384 took the personality.
Six years later it nearly vanished. Zenith had passed to Zenith Radio Corporation in 1971, and in 1975 the order was blunt: stop the El Primero, strip out the lines, scrap the tooling and destroy the documentation, and put everything into quartz. Charles Vermot quietly disobeyed. He took away presses, cams, gauges and drawings, catalogued the lot and walled it up in the attic of the Le Locle factory. In 1984 he brought it out intact, and the El Primero went back into production without having to be reinvented.
The reissue came in 2019 with the fiftieth anniversary, reconstructed from digitised originals. A year later Zenith added the missing piece: the ladder bracelet, the open-link design that Gay Frères, the Geneva bracelet house, had made for this very watch in period. The M384 suffix in the reference is precisely that, the ladder; the C815 variant comes on an alligator strap.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
A tonneau case of 37 mm by 12.60 mm tall, domed sapphire with an anti-reflective coating, sapphire case back and 50 metres of water resistance. The flanks are flat and wide, almost sculptural, and that is the quickest way to tell an A384 from an A386, which is round.
What rules here is the calibre El Primero 400, not the 3600: 31 jewels, 278 components, 5 Hz and around 50 hours of reserve. That changes how you read the whole dial. Small seconds at 9, a 30-minute register at 3, a 12-hour totaliser at 6, date at 4:30 and a tachymeter on the rim, because the central hand really is a conventional seconds hand.
The reference suffix decides the bracelet: M384 is the open-link Gay Frères ladder, C815 the black alligator strap. Do not confuse it with the A385 Revival, which shares the case but has a brown gradient dial and its own numbering.
CollectingWhat collectors check
The ladder bracelet is what makes this reference special and also what needs the closest look. Open links collect dirt in the gaps and stretch over the years: take the bracelet by one end, let it hang, and see how much play there is between links. Always ask about the spare links, which go missing easily.
The tonneau case has large flat brushed surfaces that show every scuff, and they are among the hardest to refinish without deforming the edges. Between an honest example with marks and a repolished one, the honest one nearly always wins.
As for the movement, the 400 is the classic El Primero architecture: easier to live with than the 3600, and ten hours shorter on reserve. Check that all three hands snap back to zero, and if the watch has been sitting a while, bear in mind that a 5 Hz calibre left years without a service wants attention before you start timing anything with it.
