The storyWhy this reference matters

The Black Bay arrived in 2012 selling nostalgia: red triangle on the bezel, a crown that stood proud, a dial doing its best impression of a fifties diver. It worked so well that Tudor barely touched the formula for over a decade. In 2024 it touched it, and not gently. Out went the red triangle, out went the gilt tones, out went every caramel-coloured wink. What remains is black, silver and white, with not one concession to pastiche. It is the same watch and a completely different one at the same time.

The snowflake hands are not a designer's flourish. They turned up in 1969 on the reference 7016, and that angular shape had a practical reason behind it: more flat surface means more luminous mass, and more luminous mass means the diver can still read the time once the water clouds over. The French Marine Nationale had been wearing Tudor since the fifties, and that relationship ended up shaping the whole catalogue. The hands disappeared in the late eighties and came back in 2012, with the Black Bay.

The MT5602-U is the serious part of the exercise. It carries Master Chronometer certification from METAS, which is a different exam from the COSC one: METAS tests the finished watch rather than the bare movement — case, dial and hands included — and it also verifies the advertised water resistance, the stated power reserve and operation inside a 15,000 gauss field, with a permitted rate of 0 to +5 seconds a day. Along the way the case came down from 14.8 to 13.6 millimetres, which on the wrist tells you more than any certificate does.

Start with the dial text. Tudors with Master Chronometer certification carry two lines above six o'clock; earlier Black Bays carried three. It's the quickest way to work out which of the two generations you're looking at, even in a mediocre listing photograph.

Then the bezel. There's no red triangle at zero here: the anodised aluminium insert is black all the way round and the graduations are in a pale tone. If a red triangle turns up, it's either an earlier Black Bay or the burgundy-bezel version. The crown changed too — smaller, and tucked closer to the case. And the handset was redrawn, with a pencil minute hand and a seconds hand finished with a small ball.

And it has no date. The MT5602-U gives hours, minutes and seconds with hacking and nothing else, so if the watch you're shown has a window, it isn't this reference. The -0001 comes on the steel bracelet; the same reference exists on a rubber strap and on a five-link bracelet.

CollectingWhat collectors check

The jump between generations counts for more than it looks on the second-hand market. The 79230 and this one share a face but not an interior: a millimetre and a bit of difference in thickness, a different certification and a different calibre. Plenty of listings run the two together, out of laziness or convenience. Check the thickness and the dial lines before you sit down to negotiate.

The bezel is anodised aluminium, not ceramic: it scratches, and knocks to the edge show. A swapped insert gives itself away because the new black sits flatter than a used one. Check the T-fit clasp too, which offers five positions across eight millimetres of travel; it should catch with a crisp click and no lateral play.

Tudor's warranty runs five years, transfers with the watch and needs no registration, so a 2024 example still has some left in it and that is worth real money: ask for the purchase date. And look at the lume under raking light, checking that markers and hands glow in the same tone; a clear difference between the two usually means something has been got at.
