The storyWhy this reference matters

The ProPilot X arrived in 2019 as a shop window. Forty-four millimetres of titanium, a skeletonised dial, the hand-wound Calibre 115 with ten days of reserve and Oris's own patented non-linear power reserve indicator, which sharpens the reading exactly when the mainspring is running out. This was a watch built to prove Oris could make its own movements, not one meant to sit quietly through a meeting. It worked: few watches were talked about more that year.

The turn came in November 2020 with the Calibre 400, launched inside an Aquis. Automatic, twin barrels, five days of reserve, more than thirty non-ferrous components, silicon pallet fork and escape wheel. Exposed to 2,250 gauss it drifted by under ten seconds a day, comfortably past what ISO 764 demands. Then Oris backed it with something harder to copy than a number: a ten-year warranty and a ten-year service interval.

In April 2022 the two paths crossed. The ProPilot X came back at Watches and Wonders in the same angular titanium case, cut down to 39mm, with the Calibre 400 inside and three dials to choose from: grey, blue and salmon. Brands do not often take five millimetres off their flagship in three years. The 7153 is the grey one, the version that asks for the least permission.

Thirty-nine millimetres across, 11.8 tall and a shade under 47 lug to lug, all of it titanium: case, crown, bracelet, even the crown guards. The ProPilot's fluted bezel is fixed, it does not turn, and the bracelet is integrated, with a folding clasp and Oris's own LIFT quick-adjust. Water resistance is 10 bar, and a sapphire case back shows the Calibre 400's rotor.

The reference number tells you everything. The 400 block is the movement, 7778 is the 39mm case and 7153 is the grey dial; 7155 is the blue and 7158 the salmon. In the -07 7 20 01TLC suffix, the 7 gives away the titanium (steel would be an 8) and the 20 is the lug width in millimetres. If someone offers you a ProPilot X whose reference opens with 01 115, that is the 2019 watch: 44mm, hand-wound, skeleton dial.

The finish is the hardest thing to judge from photographs: brushed and bead-blasted, with almost no polishing anywhere. Mirror-bright titanium on a ProPilot X should raise an eyebrow.

CollectingWhat collectors check

Titanium marks. It is lighter and it does not trigger allergies, but it is soft, and unlike steel you cannot go at it cheerfully with a stone: on a bead-blasted surface any refinishing leaves a lighter patch you can spot across a room. Assume a used example will carry fine marks along the bracelet edges, and rate the absence of dents on the sharp edges above the absence of scratches.

The warranty is a bargaining chip. Those ten Oris years depend on the watch being registered with MyOris, so ask the seller whether they registered it, on what date, and what paperwork they still hold. With a movement the brand rates for ten-year service intervals, knowing when the clock started running is money.

Work the clasp before you pay. The LIFT micro-adjust is one of the details you appreciate most day to day, and one of the first to feel tired on a watch that has been worn hard. Then wind it fully and leave it alone: with 120 hours in hand, an example that stops after two days has a story to tell.
