The storyWhy this reference matters
Orient belongs to the Seiko Epson group — check the footer of its own site, and the server the manuals sit on — and it builds its own calibres, which at this price barely anyone still does. The Bambino is the anchor of the range: the automatic that an enormous number of people buy as their first mechanical watch. It has been one of Orient's best sellers for years and the recipe hasn't shifted. Clean dial, domed crystal, steel case, and an in-house calibre on show through the back.
For years the Bambino was a 40.5 mm watch, and that was its ceiling — too big for a lot of people who wanted exactly this style and couldn't get it in their size. In May 2022 Orient released the 38.4 mm version, 44 mm lug to lug and 12.5 mm thick, and the enthusiast crowd went straight for it. The RA-AC0M04Y is the beige dial with blued hands; the rest of the series is the M01S in a gold-tone case, the M02B in black and the M03S in silver.
Inside sits the F6724, built by Orient: 22 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, over 40 hours of reserve and a generous official tolerance of +25 to -15 seconds a day. But the point of the F6724 isn't accuracy — it's what it added over the earlier entry-level Orients. Hand winding, and hacking. Being able to wind it in the morning and set it to the second against your phone changes the whole relationship you have with a cheap automatic.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
There's a naming muddle here worth clearing up. Orient doesn't use the word Bambino anywhere on its site — the watch is listed as the Classic & Simple Style 38. Bambino is the trade name it's sold under outside Japan. As for the Version 2 label, that comes from the older 40.5 mm generation, where the V2 was the one with applied markers and no numerals; because the RA-AC0M04Y repeats that dial layout, plenty of shops tag it the same way. Same watch, whichever label it's wearing.
The numbers off the official spec sheet, so you buy the right reference: 38.4 mm wide, 44.0 mm lug to lug, 12.5 mm thick, 54 grams, 20 mm strap width, beige dial, display back and a box-type domed crystal. Three bar of water resistance, JIS class 1 magnetic resistance, a three-year warranty and a May 2022 release date. Some shops tack the suffix 10B onto the reference.
The crystal is the signature detail and also the warning: it's domed mineral, not sapphire. That box profile is what gives the watch its period look, and it's what bends the markers when you tilt it. If a listing claims sapphire, either the seller has it wrong or somebody has fitted an aftermarket crystal. One more thing to know before you buy: there is no lume on this watch anywhere.
CollectingWhat collectors check
First thing to check on a used Bambino is exactly that: the crystal. A mineral box crystal scratches, and more to the point it takes knocks on the rim of the dome. Swapping it isn't the ten-minute job a flat crystal is, because the height and the curve both have to be matched, so an example with a clean crystal is worth a good deal more than a marked one even when everything else is equal.
Second, the case back. It's a display back and it's press-fitted, not screwed. Every time it comes off there's a chance of leaving lever marks on the edge of the case, so turn the watch over and look for nicks all around it. If they're there, somebody has been inside — and on a watch at this price that usually means either work that didn't need doing or a back-street service.
Third, the rate. The F6724's official tolerance runs from +25 to -15 seconds a day, so a watch gaining twenty seconds daily is inside specification. It isn't broken, it's unregulated, and a watchmaker will sort it in one sitting. What regulating won't fix is a rotor that grinds like sand or a seconds hand that refuses to stop when you pull the crown. That's a reason to walk away.

Does the Orient Bambino 38 have a sapphire crystal?
No. It uses a domed mineral crystal, box style, which is precisely what gives it that vintage look. It scratches more readily than sapphire and its shape makes replacement fiddly, so buy one with the crystal in good order.
Can you hand-wind the Orient Bambino?
Yes. The calibre F6724 takes a manual wind and hacks as well, so you can start it from the crown and set it to the second. The earlier entry-level Orients did neither.
What is the power reserve on the Bambino?
Over 40 hours, according to Orient's own spec sheet. In practice: take it off on Friday night and by Sunday morning it has stopped and needs setting again.
Can you swim with an Orient Bambino?
Better not. Three bar, so 30 metres, covers rain, splashes and washing your hands. It also has a press-fit display back and a leather strap — two more reasons to keep it away from water.
