The storyWhy this reference matters

The Seamaster Professional Diver 300M arrived in 1993 as the reference 2531.80, running a modified, chronometer-certified ETA 2892-A2. Two years later Pierce Brosnan wore it in GoldenEye and the watch's life changed: it stopped being one more diver and became the Bond watch, a job it has held ever since. That reference was built into the mid-2000s and is still how most people get into a second-hand Seamaster.

For the twenty-fifth anniversary in 2018, Omega did not tweak it. It rebuilt it. The case grew from 41 to 42 mm, the dial became a polished ceramic plate with the waves laser-cut into it, the bezel turned ceramic with the diving scale in white enamel, the date moved from three o'clock down to six, the helium valve took on a conical profile, and the case back went sapphire for the first time in the model's history. Fourteen new references in one go.

Inside went the calibre 8800 Master Chronometer, and that is where the real jump is. The 2531.80 was a conventional COSC chronometer; this one passes the eight METAS tests with the movement already in its case, and shrugs off fields of 15,000 gauss. In everyday terms: you can leave it on the magnetic cover of a tablet and it will not lose the plot. Without changing its face, the film-star diver became one of the hardest watches on the market to knock out of adjustment.

The 210.30.42.20.03.001 is the steel model on a steel bracelet, with a blue ceramic dial and bezel. It measures 42 mm across, 13.56 mm thick and 49.90 mm lug to lug, with 20 mm between the lugs. If someone quotes you 41 mm, you are looking at the pre-2018 generation.

Three marks give this generation away from a metre off: the date at six (it used to sit at three), the laser-cut waves on ceramic — not printed, and they shift as the light moves across them — and the rhodium-plated skeleton hands filled with white Super-LumiNova. The bezel scale is white enamel inlaid into blue ceramic, not paint on aluminium.

Round the back, a sapphire case back with a waved edge, something the model never had before 2018. The helium escape valve is still at ten o'clock, now conical rather than flat, and the crown screws down, as it should on a 300-metre watch.

CollectingWhat collectors check

The expensive part is the bezel. Ceramic barely scratches, but hit it hard enough and it chips, and a chip in the insert cannot be polished out — the whole insert gets replaced. Go over the bezel edge with a loupe, especially between twelve and three, which is where door frames leave their mark.

Turn the bezel: it should go one way only, anticlockwise, with firm clicks and no side play. Check the diver's extension in the clasp too, and that the helium valve screws in and out without seizing. On the bracelet, look for stretch between the links near the clasp, which is where wear shows up first.

On value: blue on a bracelet is the best-selling version in the collection, so it is easy to buy and easy to sell, but do not expect it to climb. The special editions — the 007 pieces, the titanium and ceramic ones — play a different game. Always ask for the Master Chronometer card: without it the watch is worth less and tracing its history gets harder.
