The storyWhy this reference matters

The Spirit collection began in 2020 with its eyes on the years when Longines dressed record-breaking pilots. That's where the oversized crown comes from, the diamond-cut indices and the baton hands packed with lume. It's also where the five applied stars under the logo come from: Longines once used them to mark its better-grade movements, and has brought them back as shorthand for a COSC pass. Every Spirit is a certified chronometer; the stars say it without saying it.

The Zulu Time surname arrived in 2022, and it isn't bargain-bin aviation talk. In the international phonetic alphabet the letter Z is Zulu, and in aviation and the military Z stands for universal time — the shared reference when everyone is flying over a different zone. Longines has an antecedent of its own to pull on, too: its first wristwatch with a second time zone, from 1925, wore the Z flag painted on the dial.

The interesting part is the L844.4, developed by ETA for Longines on the A31.L411 base. It's a traveller's GMT: pull the crown and the hour hand jumps an hour at a time without touching the 24-hour hand or stopping the seconds. You land, reset local time in five seconds, and home time is still sitting there untouched. Silicon hairspring, 25,200 vibrations per hour and 72 hours of reserve finish the picture.

Forty-two millimetres and 13.9 tall: this is a watch with presence, and that's worth knowing before you order one online. This reference has the anthracite dial — it also exists in matte black and blue sunray — a bidirectional rotating bezel with a ceramic insert graduated to 24 hours, and a steel bracelet with a double folding safety clasp and push-button release.

The test that settles whether it's a true GMT or just a 24-hour hand happens at the counter: unscrew the crown, pull it to the first position and turn. If the hour hand advances in one-hour steps while minutes and seconds sit unmoved, that's the L844. If it's the 24-hour hand that moves, you're being shown something else.

The bidirectional bezel lets you read a third zone by turning it against the 24-hour hand. The quick-release strap system, with a tab under the lug, is another of the collection's marks: bracelet to leather with no tools. Mind the spring bars, which disappear with astonishing ease.

CollectingWhat collectors check

The ceramic bezel insert is hard but brittle at the edges: one sharp knock against a door frame can take a splinter out, and that doesn't get polished, it gets replaced. Look at it against the light while you turn the watch. Check as well that the bezel turns firmly, with no sideways play.

Being a certified chronometer, it should come with its COSC paperwork; ask for it. The silicon hairspring spares you the classic magnetism scare, so if the watch is running wildly fast or slow the culprit won't be the magnetic clasp on a bag — it'll be something less cheerful.

And a warning about size, which is where most of the regret gets generated: 42 mm across with nearly 14 mm of height doesn't suit every wrist. Longines builds the same watch at 39 mm, same calibre, same certification. Try both on before you decide from a photograph.
