The storyWhy this reference matters
The collection began in 1992 with a simple idea that the rest of the industry found rather uncomfortable: certify the finished watch, not the bare machine. COSC measures loose movements; Jaeger-LeCoultre's thousand-hour control puts the cased watch through more than a month of continuous testing before signing it off. The name Master Control comes from that protocol, and so does the collection's reputation as the dress watch you can wear without fussing over it.
In 2020 the house redrew it without making any noise about it. The diameter stayed at 40 mm, but the bezel slimmed down and the dial looks bigger for it; the finish became a brushed white-silvered sunray with applied triangular markers, Arabic numerals and a blue seconds hand that has been the house signature ever since. For the first time the range got a sapphire case back, and the strap traded formal alligator for a pale Novonappa calfskin, a good deal more casual.
The change that matters cannot be seen. The calibre 899 was rebuilt inside: an escapement with silicon parts to cut friction, a redesigned barrel to take a longer, stronger mainspring, and titanium screws in the balance. The result is a power reserve that jumps from 38 hours to 70. In plain terms, a watch you can take off on Friday afternoon and find still running on Monday morning.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
Careful with the two sibling references. The Q4018420 and the Q4018421 are the same steel watch with a silvered dial and differ only in the strap: the 420 is the one launched in 2020 on pale Novonappa calfskin. Jaeger-LeCoultre now keeps only the Q4018421 in the catalogue, on black alligator, so if you want the 420 you are buying second-hand by definition.
To separate this generation from earlier Master Control Dates, turn the watch over: since 2020 the back has been sapphire and shows the calibre; before that it was solid. From the front, the bezel is visibly narrower, the seconds hand is blue, and the dial carries Arabic numerals at 12, 6 and 9 with the word "Automatique" printed above the six, and the date window at three.
The measurements are 40 mm across by 8.78 mm tall in steel, 5 bar, sapphire crystal. Catalogues and dealers list the movement as calibre 899AC; Jaeger-LeCoultre itself simply calls it the reworked 899. Either way it should give 70 hours: if the seller says 38, he is describing the previous generation.
CollectingWhat collectors check
This is the Jaeger-LeCoultre you buy to wear, not to store. It is not rare, it is not limited, and its value depends almost entirely on condition and on being complete. That works in favour of a patient buyer: very good examples and badly abused ones start from the same asking price, and ten minutes with a loupe will tell you which is which.
Look at the contrast of finishes. The case has brushed flanks and polished lugs, and that boundary is the first thing a generic polish destroys: if the lugs look rounded and the brushing on the sides has gone, the watch has lost its geometry. Check as well that the sapphire back has no deep scratches, and that the silvered dial, which is very reflective, is free of specks and hand marks.
The Novonappa strap is soft calfskin and ages quickly: finding it worn out is normal and no reason to walk away, but the original Jaeger-LeCoultre buckle should still be there. Ask for the warranty card with a legible date and for the service history; the 899's silicon escapement is reliable, but a watch that has gone years without a service always turns out to cost more than it looks.
