The storyWhy this reference matters

The first Aquatimer dates from 1967, reference 812 AD: 37 mm, an EPSA Super Compressor case with two screw-down crowns at 2 and 4, an internal rotating bezel and 200 metres of water resistance. Inside, the calibre 8541 with Pellaton winding. The idea of putting the dive scale under the crystal rather than on an external bezel starts here, and it has never entirely left the family. The 816 AD followed a year later, with a cushion case and 300 metres.

The serious jump came in 1982 with the Ocean 2000, designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche: a 42 mm one-piece titanium case rated to 2,000 metres, the first production dive watch built wholly from titanium. It was developed for Bundesmarine divers before it ever reached the public, with military variants such as the Minentaucheruhr reference 3519, made for mine clearance teams. That case set the thin, chamfered bezel the collection still uses.

In 2014 IWC rebuilt the family around the SafeDive system: an outer bezel that turns both ways but only drives the inner ring in one direction, the one that shortens your dive time. You handle it like a normal bezel, you read it inside the crystal, and you can't lengthen a stop by accident. In 2022 came reference 3288 with the calibre 32111 and, from the outside, almost nothing changed.

The IW328801 is the blue dial on a blue rubber strap. The other two from the 2022 launch are the IW328802, black on rubber, and the IW328803, black on a steel bracelet. The case is 42 mm across by 14.1 mm tall, rated to 300 metres.

The detail that gives away the lineage sits on the inner ring: it carries a quarter-hour scale, like the 1967 Aquatimer, rather than the full sixty-minute scale you'll find on nearly every other diver. The outer bezel is thin and chamfered, a direct nod to Porsche's Ocean 2000.

The case back is solid, so you never see the 32111 however much it is the news of this generation. The rubber strap measures 22 mm at the lug and tapers to 18 at the buckle, with IWC's patented quick-change system. An Aquatimer Automatic with a sapphire back is not this reference.

CollectingWhat collectors check

The trap with this reference is that the 2022 update is invisible. Case, dial, bezel and measurements are all but identical to the previous generation; the only change was the engine, from the ETA-based 30120 with 42 hours to the in-house 32111 with 120. If you're reading listings, the useful question isn't how it looks but which reference it is: 3288 has the new movement, 3290 the old one.

First thing to test is the bezel. SafeDive couples the outer bezel to the inner ring through gearing; if it turns without driving, slips over part of its travel, or leaves the ring out of line with the markers, the coupling is worn — and that's a trip to a watchmaker, not an afternoon's adjustment.

After that, the usual on a 300 m watch people genuinely get wet: crowns and gaskets. Check the crown screws down with no tight spot, and ask when it was last pressure tested. The original blue rubber fades in sun and in chlorine; not serious, but it's the part that visibly ages fastest and it belongs in the negotiation.
