The storyWhy this reference matters

Grand Seiko has been building GMTs for decades, but this is the model that fixed the house image of the travelling watch. Its direct predecessor, the SBGM021, arrived in the early 2010s with the same ivory dial and a Seiko logo at twelve. In 2017, when Grand Seiko stopped being a Seiko line and became a brand in its own right, the dial kept only its own name and the reference became SBGM221.

That dial is half the watch. Warm ivory, glossy and perfectly flat, with a finish the brand describes as porcelain-like; over it sit rectangular markers with eight hand-polished facets — eleven on those at twelve, six and nine — throwing light back like small mirrors. Above all of it, a box sapphire, domed at the edges, which stretches the outer markers slightly when you look from an angle. It's an old trick and it works.

The calibre 9S66 is a GMT of the proper travelling sort: the local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps without stopping the watch and carries the date with it, forwards or backwards. Automatic with manual winding, 35 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour, 72 hours of reserve and a stated rate of +5 to −3 seconds a day. It is built at Shizukuishi, with an escape wheel made by MEMS technology and a Spron alloy hairspring.

39.5 mm across, 13.7 tall and 46.9 lug to lug: this is not a flat watch, and you should know that before you try it on. Steel, 19 mm lugs, crocodile strap with a folding clasp, 88 grams with the strap fitted. Display back held by six screws.

The 24-hour scale is printed on the dial itself, not on a rotating bezel, and the hand that sweeps it is blued steel. The date window sits at three with a bevelled frame. If the watch in front of you says 'Seiko' at twelve, it isn't an SBGM221 — it's the earlier SBGM021.

And one oddity that catches people out: the official spec sheet credits it with splash resistance only. A GMT built for travelling that can't go in the hotel pool.

CollectingWhat collectors check

That flat, glossy dial forgives nothing: any speck, fingerprint or moisture mark shows up instantly, and there's no texture to hide it in. Look at it under raking light with a loupe before anything else, because a stained ivory dial is expensive to put right and sets the price for the whole watch.

Test the function before you pay. The local hand should jump cleanly in one-hour steps, both ways, and the date should follow it across midnight. If the date doesn't move as you wind the hours forward, something is wrong in the quick-set mechanism, and that's a trip to the workshop.

After that, the usual Grand Seiko checks: crisp lug edges with no signs of repolishing, and a clean border between polished and brushed surfaces. The 19 mm strap is easy to replace, but the original folding clasp adds value. And if the watch has lived anywhere near steam with that water resistance, look at the inside of the crystal.
