The storyWhy this reference matters

In 1969 the VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe — the state combine that was Glashütte Original's legal predecessor — built a dive watch called the Spezimatic Type RP TS 200. It measured 36 mm, carried huge radium-painted numerals and was meant as a working instrument. In East Germany you didn't walk into a shop and buy one: they were handed to Party officials and to particular units, which is why it is now a prized rarity among collectors of German watchmaking.

In 2019 Glashütte Original launched the Spezialist collection with three models: the SeaQ, the limited-edition SeaQ 1969 and the SeaQ Panorama Date. All three are tested to the German DIN 8306 standard and to the international ISO 6425 — the line that separates a certified dive watch from one that merely looks the part. The SeaQ 1969 is the faithful copy of the original; the 39.5 mm SeaQ is the production version, same silhouette but less small print on the dial.

Inside runs the in-house calibre 39-11: 4 Hz, around 40 hours of power reserve, a skeletonised rotor with a heavy-metal weight, swan-neck fine regulation and the classic Glashütte stripes across the bridges. And it has one detail very few watches can claim — the case back uses a bayonet fitting, so the nautical logo engraving always ends up straight when you close it. The dials are made at the brand's own plant in Pforzheim.

The giveaway against the SeaQ 1969 is the luminous material. On the limited edition the numerals are beige and the hands green, a deliberate mismatch copied straight from the 1969 watch. On this production SeaQ, dial and hands share a single aged tone, «Old Radium». Two different shades means you are looking at the 1969, not this reference.

The other tell is the dial text. The SeaQ 1969 keeps the original's «25 rubis» and «shockproof» inscriptions, neither of which describes the modern movement underneath in any way. The 39.5 mm SeaQ drops them and leaves the dial clean with the signature, «Glashütte i/SA» and «Made in Germany». Date at three on a white background, unidirectional bezel with a black ceramic insert, screw-down crown.

Don't mix up sizes within the family. The SeaQ Panorama Date is a different animal: 43.2 mm, running the 100-hour calibre 36. This reference ending 80-70 is the steel one with a black dial and a metal bracelet; the textile mesh and «tropic» rubber versions carry a different reference ending. Lug width is 20 mm.

CollectingWhat collectors check

Start with the ceramic bezel. It barely scratches but it chips, especially on the outer edge and around the triangle at twelve; a chip cannot be repaired and means replacing the whole part. Test the click too: it should be firm, unidirectional and free of side play. On the back, check that the logo engraving sits straight — the bayonet fitting exists precisely for that, and a crooked case back gives away a botched opening.

The honest weak point here is the 40-hour power reserve, which already sounded short in 2019 and sounds shorter now. What you get in exchange is a genuine in-house calibre, with finishing you can see through the back on the sapphire versions. If the example in front of you has an engraved solid back, that's the other catalogue option, not somebody's bodge.

The steel bracelet pushes the price up and is the most sought-after of the three options, so check it is the original and that the spare links are there. Papers with the full reference, the box, and — if the watch has actually seen salt water — look for salt residue at the lugs and around the crown. A SeaQ that has been properly used is not a problem; one that has been used and never rinsed is.
