The storyWhy this reference matters
Everything Bell & Ross had made since 2005 came from the same place: the cockpit instrument, the circle inside the square, the watch as a piece of military kit. The BR 05, shown in 2019, is the first time the brand dropped the alibi. No aircraft, no diver, no parachutist. There is a city and a steel watch on an integrated bracelet — the category Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe had monopolised for decades and that half the industry piled into in 2019.
The trick of the BR 05 is in the corners. Bell & Ross kept the signature — round dial, square case, four screws — but rounded the edges and let the case flank run into the bracelet with no visible seam, which is exactly what defines the genre. It is also the first integrated bracelet the house has made. The case is three screwed-together parts (bezel, middle case and back), and the whole thing measures 40 mm wide, 10.5 mm tall and 47 mm lug to lug.
The BR05A-BL-ST/SST is the entry version and the one that tells the story best: steel alternating polished and brushed surfaces, a black sunray dial, applied numerals and markers in Super-LumiNova, a screw-down crown and a sapphire back to show the skeletonised rotor. Inside is the BR-CAL.321, a Sellita SW300-1 dressed with sandblasted, grey-treated bridges. The brand also made a point of refusing to play at artificial scarcity, shipping several thousand pieces to its retail network in the first week.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
The BR 05 is told apart from the BR 03 by its profile, not its dial. Look at the edge: on the 03 the case is a square block with short lugs and a strap; on the 05 the flanks are curved and the bracelet grows out of the case body with no visible hinge. The 05 also has a screw-down crown and a sapphire back, where the 03 has a solid one.
The reference says nearly all of it: BR05A-BL-ST/SST is automatic (A), black (BL), steel (ST) and steel bracelet (SST). The same reference ending in SRB is the rubber strap version, with a different feel on the wrist and a different price. And the BL dial is black with a sunray finish, not flat lacquer: turn your wrist and the black fans open from the centre.
Figures to check against: 40 mm wide, 10.5 mm tall, 47 mm lug to lug and 100 metres of water resistance. On a square watch with an integrated bracelet, the number that decides whether it fits is the lug-to-lug, not the 40 mm width, and that detail escapes a lot of people buying online.
CollectingWhat collectors check
The integrated bracelet is the first thing to examine. Since it cannot be replaced with a generic one, loose links or a worn clasp turn into an expensive problem. Hold it by one end and let it hang: if it rattles and there is visible play between links, it has had a life. Check the folding clasp too, which on this kind of watch works far harder than it looks.
The finish alternates polished and brushed on the case and on the centre links. It is handsome and it is fragile: a home repolish erases the border between the two finishes and there is no going back. Look at the top edges of the bracelet against the light, because that is the first place the line disappears, and compare the shine of the centre links with the outer ones.
Nothing to worry about with the movement. The BR-CAL.321 is a dressed Sellita SW300-1 with 42 hours of reserve, 25 jewels and 4 Hz: any decent workshop can service it and parts are no mystery. What is worth insisting on is that the watch comes with its spare links and the adjustment tool, because tracking down loose links for an integrated bracelet is never as easy as it sounds.
