The storyWhy this reference matters
In 1972 Audemars Piguet committed a commercial heresy: charging as much for a steel watch as for a gold one. Gérald Genta's Royal Oak arrived with an octagonal bezel, eight hexagonal screws on show and a bracelet that grew out of the case with no seam. The dial was almost as provocative as the case: a very dark blue with the texture of upholstery, which the dial maker Stern obtained by adding black pigment number 50 to the protective lacquer. The cloud effect was not decoration, it was what the black did chemically as it hit the lacquer.
The 41 millimetre is a more recent and far less epic story. It arrived in 2012 as the 15400, was renewed in 2019 as the 15500 — new calibre, date window pushed out to the bezel, no "Automatic" on the dial — and in 2022 became the 15510 for the collection's fiftieth anniversary. Each step reworked fractions of a millimetre on the dial that barely register in a photograph and change the whole watch on the wrist: thinner, longer markers, a minute track that stops being a separate ring, and tapisserie that runs all the way to the edge.
The 15510ST.OO.1320ST.01 is the version that brings that 1972 blue back and calls it by its archive name. Inside is the calibre 4302, an in-house automatic with 32 jewels, 257 parts, 4 Hz and 70 hours of reserve, visible through a sapphire back. Watches built during the anniversary year also carry a commemorative rotor that appears nowhere on the spec sheet and that the second-hand market examines very closely indeed.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
Start with the code. In Audemars Piguet's nomenclature the final suffix on 15510ST.OO.1320ST identifies the dial execution: .01 is the "Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50". On the brand's own site the .01, .02, .03 and even the .10 live side by side with the same steel case and bracelet but grey, black or green dials. If the number matches except for the last two digits, it is not this watch.
To keep the 15510 apart from the 15500, look only at the dial. On the 15500 the minute track is printed on a separate ring outside the Grande Tapisserie motif; on the 15510 the grid runs to the edge and the markers are thinner and longer. The 15510 also signs "Audemars Piguet" without the AP logo above it. Both share the 41 mm case and the 4302 calibre, so the movement will not settle the question.
The steel case is 41 mm across by around 10.4 mm tall, water resistant to 50 metres, with sapphire treated inside and out. Turn the watch over: the back is sapphire and shows the 4302 with its gold rotor. If the watch is being sold as a fiftieth-anniversary piece, that is where the commemorative engraving has to be.
CollectingWhat collectors check
On a steel Royal Oak, the value lives in the edges. The case alternates brushed surfaces with polished bevels, and the whole point is that the line between the two finishes stays clean and straight. A generic workshop polish rounds off the chamfer of the octagonal bezel and smears the bevels on the links: irreversible short of cutting the metal again, and no service invoice brings it back. Ask for photographs of the bezel against the light before anything else.
The bracelet is integrated, so its wear cannot be fixed by swapping it. Check the play between links by pulling gently with the watch hanging: bracelet stretch is the chronic complaint on these watches and it makes any refurbishment expensive. Check too that the eight bezel screws are aligned and free of screwdriver marks, and look at the state of the AP folding clasp, which scratches easily.
With the reference still in the catalogue, buying second-hand competes with the boutique waiting list: a full set with box, certificate and a legible warranty date is what makes the difference. If the seller makes a point of the anniversary rotor, insist on seeing it through the sapphire back in a sharp photograph, not in the text of the listing.
