The storyWhy this reference matters
On 24 October 1994, in Dresden's Royal Palace, Günter Blümlein, Walter Lange and Hartmut Knothe unveiled the first four watches of the revived company: Saxonia, Arkade, Tourbillon Pour le Mérite and Lange 1. The last one made all the noise. Its off-centre dial — hours to the left, no indication ever overlapping another — is laid out on golden-ratio proportions, and the outsize date window copies the five-minute digital clock above the stage of Dresden's Semper Opera. Half of Swiss watchmaking ended up imitating that date.
For twenty-one years the Lange 1 ran on the calibre L901.0. At SIHH 2015 Lange retired it and introduced the L121.1, an entirely new architecture: 368 parts instead of 365, twin barrels — hence the DOPPELFEDERHAUS printed at the foot of the dial — and, above all, a date that snaps over at midnight instead of dragging itself round the way the old one did. The balance became free-sprung with eccentric poising weights, no regulator index, with a hairspring made in-house, and moved next to the crown under a full three-quarter plate. The case lost two tenths of a millimetre: 9.8 mm against 10.
White gold turned up late to the party. In 2015 the new Lange 1 launched in platinum, pink gold and yellow gold; reference 191.039 waited until SIHH 2016. And it arrived with something the house almost never allows on a dress watch: rhodium-plated gold hands and applied markers filled with luminous compound. The dial is still solid silver in argenté, the case still measures the familiar 38.5 mm, and the alligator strap closes on an 18-carat white gold buckle.

IdentificationHow to tell it apart
The prefix tells you everything. References beginning 101 are first generation (calibre L901.0, 365 parts, a case 10 mm tall); those beginning 191 are 2015 onwards (L121.1, 368 parts, 9.8 mm). With the watch in front of you the quickest test is the date: on a 191.039 it snaps over at midnight, while a 101.039 takes a few minutes to finish the change. Through the sapphire back, the L121.1 puts the balance right up against the crown.
Telling white gold from platinum in a photograph is impossible, and that is where listing errors creep in. The 191.025 is platinum and carries a rhodié dial; the 191.039 is white gold and its dial is argenté. On the wrist there is no mistaking them, because platinum weighs a great deal more. Check as well that the buckle is 18-carat white gold and that the papers say 191.039 — not 101.039, not 191.025.
Three pieces of dial text help verify the watch: DOPPELFEDERHAUS at the bottom (the twin barrels behind the 72 hours), AUF and AB on the right marking the ends of the power reserve scale, and MADE IN GERMANY under the hours circle. The small seconds sits in its own subdial, below and right of the hour ring, and the two circles touch without ever overlapping. That is the governing rule of this dial, and any layout that breaks it is not a Lange 1.
CollectingWhat collectors check
The first thing anyone experienced looks at is the case. The Lange 1 has flat flanks and a very fine bezel edge; heavy polishing rounds that edge off and you catch it instantly against the light. Then the date: if it does not jump cleanly at midnight, something is wrong in the disc mechanism. Then completeness — box, certificate and guarantee booklet genuinely add up, and a white gold buckle swapped for a generic one costs more than you would think.
Servicing is the other tender spot. Lange supplies no parts to third parties, so an overhaul goes through the brand and is neither cheap nor quick. Documented history is worth a lot; a case opened by some passing watchmaker, with marks around the sapphire back or on the screws, is a warning. Check the alligator strap too — replacing it is no drama, but the original buckle has to be in the box.
On variants, white gold is the most discreet of the four metals and the one most often mistaken for steel in photographs, which tends to favour the patient buyer. Within the reference itself, look at whether the dial carries the luminous markers. That is what defines this version, and what people either love or find slightly wrong depending on who you ask.

Is the Lange 1 automatic or hand-wound?

Why is the Lange 1 date so big?
Because it copies the five-minute digital clock above the stage at Dresden's Semper Opera. Lange put it on the wrist in 1994 using two overlapping discs, and half the industry has since made its own version of the idea.
Can a Lange 1 get wet?
Only to 3 bar, about 30 metres. It will survive rain and washing your hands, but it is not built for swimming: sapphire case back, alligator strap and the temperament of a dress watch.
